The Lakeland 10 Peaks Challenge with Professional Mountain Leaders

You have probably heard about the Lakeland 24 Peaks Challenge, well this is day one of that challenge, the harder day too! This epic traverse from Buttermere to Langdale, taking in Lakeland greats such as Great Gable, Scafell Pike and Bowfell along the way is one tough cookie!

This challenge will push your physical and mental fitness to it's limit. Expect an long day containing big ascents, shortly followed by morale crushing descents. Do you have what it takes to complete this challenge?

The Lakeland 10 Peaks Challenge is best suited to experienced walkers with a very good level of fitness. Mountain experience is key to the success of this challenge, and in truth more people fail to achieve the intended route then complete. The Borrowdale10 Challenge is a good event to have completed before this event. It is a good training event for the Lakeland 24 Peaks Challenge, Welsh 3000's and the Lakeland 3000's in 24 Hours

Terrain: Rough & Rocky    Duration: Approx. 12-14 Hours

Route Stats: Miles - 17  Ascent - 2520m.      Start Location: The Old Dungeon Ghyll / Buttermere.

This epic day starts in the village of Buttermere, however as it is a linear journey it is best to meet at the end point (The Old Dungeon Ghyll, Langdale) and get transported to the start point*. The challenge starts steeply up the slopes of Red Pike. A tough 90 minutes or so of walking brings you to the top of the ridge line where two more peaks come easily. The first big descent comes as you make your way down Gamlin End on High Crag. The route heads over Haystacks (bagged but not included) and then across to Green and Great Gable. A huge height loss is again suffered from the summit of Great Gable but soon you're back on the up as you join the Corridor Route and make your way in to the Scafell Massif. Lingmell, Scafell Pike, and Great End all come fairly swiftly, leaving just Esk Pike and Bowfell. From the summit of Bowfell you descend down 'The Band' and in to Langdale, where there is a conveniently placed pub to round off the day!

As previously mentioned, we see quite a high failure rate on the route mentioned above. Often, this is due to groups moving too slowly across the terrain (due to a lack of fitness or mountain walking experience). We operate a cut off time after Great Gable, and should this time be missed the route is diverted to go more direct to Langdale, but we may still be able to knock off some peaks along the way in order to get up to 10 anyway! Clearly, this is a tough day out - but all the more reason to train for it, which will all make it so much more rewarding when you cross the finish line.
