Please note, this course is a running course, and you could expect to cover 20km with 750m ascent during the course. For those wanting to learn similar skills, but in a less energetic manner (i.e walking) please check out our 'One Day Navigation Courses'.
Are you a trail runner that would like to have a bit more confidence in map skills? Maybe you feel over-reliant on technology when heading out on your runs?
This course is ideal for those with good levels of fitness wanting to have a practical day out and about with an experienced leader gaining some skills. We focus this course on trail running, so a heavy emphasis on strategy, but we will also head onto the open fell and cover some useful compass skills too.
Over the duration of the course you can expect to cover:
Learning about the Map - May Symbols, Scales and Grid References
Following Routes and navigational tactics - Map orientation, handrails, catchment features
Compass Work - How to do a bearing and walk on it accurately
Contour Interpretation for a higher understanding of map reading
This event is an 'Open Event' and there are a maximum of 6 places available. You will be accompanied by one fully qualified and first aid trained instructor. All technical kit such as maps and compasses is provided if you need to borrow it.
