Saturday 1st February 2025 - 0845 - Glenridding, Ullswater
Join us for a day of mountain skills on the slopes of Helvellyn, England's third tallest mountain.
Our one day courses are perfect for getting a grips on various mountain skills, and what we can cover on the day will largely depend on what the conditions are on the mountain. The most obvious influencer on the course will be how much snow, if any snow is present on your course date. As such the course could look like the following:
Limited / No snow Cover:
• Introduction to map and compass Navigation
• Intoduction to scrambling (Grade 1 terrain)
• Route planning in relation to the weather and conditions
Snowy conditions:
• Winter Kit - What you need and why you need it.
• Using Ice Axe & Crampons - An introduction into Crampon and Ice Axe use. We will aim to give you as much time walking in crampons as possible! Ice axe arrest is often covered, conditions allowing.
• An Intro to Avalanche Awareness- Gain a snapshot into the art of avalanche awareness
Should winter prevail, this really is a perfect introductory day into winter walking. Over the years people have gained so much enjoyment from this journey up into / onto Helvellyn. For some it is just a chance to expereince winter walking, and for others they are keen to lay the foundations on which to build themselves into a fully fledged, confident, winter mountaineer.
The course would last in the region of 5-7 hours.
Technical kit in the form of winter boots, ice axes and crampons can be hired from us directly. Helmets are lent out free of charge.
There will be a maximum of 6 people per instructor on the course to ensure quality of instruction. If you have a larger party then please contact us and we can see what we can do for you.
As above, the course will run given the conditions are safe to do so, irrespective of whether snow is present or not. Should you wish to gain additional flexibility on your booking (I.e the ability to move it should there be no snow to a later date) then we recommend booking a bespoke course with us.
