Testing conditions on today's winter skills course. With a wet and windy forecast we again left Glenridding earlier than planned in a bid to beat the weather but unfortunately it didn't play ball. As we neared the Red Tarn 'Washing Machine' we knew heading up Helvellyn wasn't going to be a fab move and so we climbed to the summit of Catstycam via its southern slopes.
We managed to get loads of time using crampons on the compact snow and then got the ice axe in hand on this ascent. We had lots of chat about weather, winter prep and avalanche awareness / avoidance.
It'll be interesting to see what the hills are like come tomorrow morning given the level of rain hitting the hills today. Will we see another week of winter in the Lakes as the forecast suggests or is it time to look pack the kit away...time will tell.
Thanks and well done to everyone who attended today! 💪
