Summer is fast approaching and you may be wondering what you can do to add some adventure into your family holiday here in the Lake District. As a company we're based not far from the honeypot town of Keswick, around which there are lots of pretty awesome things to do for people of all ages.
Ghyll Scrambling in Stoneycroft Ghyll
1) Book a guided walk
Guided walking is where our business started and it's our bread and butter. We offer bespoke guiding days from £220 (Half day from £180 - 4 hours max) and can guide you and your family on any route you may wish to do. There is no lower age limit, as willingness and fitness often trump age. You know your children and what they may be capable of, and of course there are walks that are more interesting than others for kids.
Lower level fell walks such as Latrigg, Walla Crag, Catbells and Castle Crag are all worthy walks. If you wanted to look bigger then Scafell Pike, Skiddaw, Blencathra and Causey Pike are all nearby.
2) Go Ghyll Scrambling
Ghyll Scrambling, alternatively known as gorge walking, is a water based activity which is brilliant fun. Just 10 minutes from Keswick is Stoneycroft Ghyll, one of the best ghylls in the Lake District accessible to young children. Lower age limits for this is around 8 years of age, and there is no upper limit! Adults absolutely love this ghyll, and the best thing about it is almost everything is avoidable! The ghyll is made up of natural slides, small jumps and scrambles for you to negotiate your way down.
To get to the ghyll there is a 10-15 minute gradual uphill walk and then we're in the water for 60-90 minutes (depending on group size). All in you'll be with us for 2-3 hours.
We provide all the technical kit required (wetsuit, buoyancy aid, helmets) and you just need to bring along swimming gear, trainers to get wet in, shorts to go over the wetsuit and an old waterproof jacket.
We charge £50pp for ghyll scrambling and have loads of dates scheduled on the website. Alternatively, you can book a bespoke session.
3) Try your hand at Rock Climbing
Down in the Borrowdale Valley (the valley that Keswick sits at the head of) there are a couple of easy accessible crags (5-25 minute walk depending on which one). Both of them are good for climbers from about the age of 8. We can even have a crack at a bit of abseiling too! Our climbing sessions can be booked on a bespoke basis and last 3-4 hours. The cost starts at £180.
4) Have an Adventure Day
Mix and max the above activities into one full day of activities for £85pp. Rock Climbing followed by a ghyll scrambling session works really well!
